Over on Slate, somebody complains about modern life killing the semicolon. All I remember from school was that the semicolon can be used instead of a period when the two clauses are closely related. I also remember this article from the NY Times where it was noted that David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam serial killer who taunted police and the press with rambling handwritten notes, could wield a semicolon just as well as a revolver.
I, however, am only handy with the semicolon when I'm programming or winking. ;)
